A NEW TREND IN LATIN AMERICA 2010
Wireless Broadband is the new star in communications in Latin America in 2010.
People became accustomed to connect to the Internet on their smartphones, netbooks and notebooks, three devices that made fury in 2009. Now, they want the same experience like fixed broadband, something that 3G can’t offer. The new trend opens the opportunity for WiMAX and LTE across the region.
The arrival of Russian operator Yota, with plans to reach all Latin America with WiMAX, awoke to companies who had bands and licenses for that service, from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego, either to sell or to invest in their own networks.
WiMAX is a commercial reality as evidenced by Yota and Clearwire, but LTE, following the GSM model, will have greater penetration and range of mobile devices around the world. This is the challenge for cellular operators in Latin America.
